Salik charges in Dubai are part of almost every drive in the city. Commute along Sheikh Zayed Road or Al Khail Road, cross the Creek or take the airport tunnel, and you'll likely pass a toll gate each way. With no barriers or booths, the cost is easy to miss until it adds up.

On a rental car, the confusing part comes later: a Salik line appears on the bill, and it isn't obvious where the number came from. Below are the 2026 rates, free windows, gates, fines and exactly how Rentico bills Salik. For everything else on the road, see our guide to Dubai traffic rules.

Short answer

Salik is Dubai's automatic road toll: a sticker tag on the windscreen is read as you drive under a gate, and the fee is deducted with no stopping. Since June 1, 2026, Salik fees in Dubai include 5% VAT: AED 6.30 per crossing in peak hours, AED 4.20 at other times, and free from 1 am to 6 am every day. On a Rentico car the tag is already installed — you pay the actual crossings plus AED 1.5 per crossing, with a monthly breakdown sent to you on WhatsApp.

What is Salik and how does it work

Salik is a free-flow toll system: there are no barriers, so cars pass the gates at normal highway speed. Each gate combines RFID antennas, which read the chip in the windscreen tag, with number-plate recognition cameras, and the toll is deducted from the account linked to the car.

If you own a car, you buy the tag yourself. Since VAT was added, a tag costs AED 105 at sales outlets and AED 126 online. On a rental car, you don't need one — the company has already registered the vehicle and fitted the tag.

Salik charges in Dubai 2026: rates by time and day

Since January 2025, Dubai has used variable pricing: the toll depends on the time and the day. From June 1, 2026, 5% VAT applies to every crossing.

DayTimeRate before VATRate with 5% VAT
Monday–Saturday6:00–10:00 and 16:00–20:00 (peak)AED 6AED 6.30
Monday–Saturday10:00–16:00 and 20:00–01:00AED 4AED 4.20
Every day01:00–06:00FreeFree
SundayAll day except 01:00–06:00AED 4AED 4.20

Rates valid as of October 9, 2026.

Salik timing in Ramadan

During Ramadan the windows shift: peak (AED 6.30) applies from 9 am to 5 pm, the lower rate (AED 4.20) from 7–9 am and 5 pm–2 am, and crossings are free from 2 am to 7 am. Tolls still apply on public holidays unless the authorities announce otherwise.

The one-hour rule for paired gates. If you pass Al Mamzar North and Al Mamzar South, or Al Safa North and Al Safa South, in the same direction within one hour, you're charged once. Turn around and drive back, and the return trip is charged separately.

Al Maktoum Bridge free time. In 2022 the RTA made this gate toll-free from 10 pm to 6 am on weekdays and all day Sunday, during the Floating Bridge closures. None of the 2026 sources we checked confirms that this window still applies under variable pricing, so plan for the standard rates and check the Salik app or the official website salik.ae before you rely on it.

How much Salik you'll pay in a month

Here are three examples at official 2026 rates, with Rentico's AED 1.5 per-crossing fee shown separately:

ScenarioSalik onlyRentico feeTotal on a rental
Office commute through one gate, peak both ways, 22 working days: 2 × 6.30 × 22AED 277.2044 × 1.5 = AED 66AED 343.20
Same commute, but driving home after 8 pm: (6.30 + 4.20) × 22AED 23144 × 1.5 = AED 66AED 297
Tourist week, 8 crossings: 8 × 4.20 to 8 × 6.30AED 33.60–50.408 × 1.5 = AED 12AED 45.60–62.40

Your own total depends on how many gates sit on your route and when you drive.

Salik on a rental car: how Rentico bills it

Rental companies register their cars with Salik themselves, so you don't need an account, a tag or a top-up. At Rentico it works like this:

  • Actual tolls, plus a fixed fee. You pay the real Salik amount for each crossing, plus an AED 1.5 administrative processing fee per crossing. Rentico's listed fees include VAT.

  • Crossings arrive automatically. Salik data comes to Rentico during your rental — nothing to report or track.

  • One invoice per month in which you crossed any gates.

  • Breakdown on WhatsApp. The final total and a crossing-by-crossing breakdown are issued at the end of the rental and sent to you on WhatsApp.

  • Paid after the fact. Rentico usually doesn't take a deposit, so Salik is paid after the crossings rather than taken from a held deposit. If your agreement does include a deposit, the terms allow it to be held for up to 21 days after return, because toll and fine data can arrive late.

  • Parking paid through Salik. Some car parks charge through the Salik account. On a rental, that parking is billed at cost plus a 10% service charge — see our guide to paid parking hours in Dubai to avoid paying when you don't need to.

One tip that applies to any rental company: if a quote includes a fixed "Salik package," compare it with pay-per-crossing using the examples above.

Salik fines: what happens if a toll goes unpaid

For car owners, a Salik fine comes from two kinds of violation:

  • Driving without an active tag. You have 10 days after your first crossing to get a tag. After that, the fine is AED 100 for the first violation, AED 200 for the second and AED 400 for later ones.

  • Insufficient balance. You have 5 days to top up. After that, the fine is AED 50.

On a rental car, the tag and balance are the company's job, so neither applies to you. Traffic fines are different: at Rentico, a fine passed on to you carries a processing fee of 5% if paid within 3 days, 10% within 4–10 days, 20% within 11–30 days and 30% after that. Here's how to check and pay traffic fines online.

How to pay less Salik

  • Pick your times: off-peak costs AED 4.20 instead of AED 6.30, and 1–6 am is free.

  • Use the paired-gate rule on Al Safa and Al Mamzar.

  • Turn on "avoid tolls" in Google Maps or Waze when time isn't critical — toll-free roads are often busier.

Salik in Abu Dhabi. Salik works only in Dubai; Abu Dhabi has its own toll system, Darb. On a Rentico car, equivalent toll systems are billed the same way — at actual cost.

Conclusion

Salik is a small but regular cost — AED 4.20 to 6.30 per crossing, and nothing at night. On a rental car, what matters is transparency: actual crossings, a clear fixed fee and a monthly breakdown you can check against your own trips.
