Dubai taxi fare per km, the minimum fare, app starting fares, Salik, fuel, parking and the 5,000 km mileage cap, priced for three real resident routes.

The first weeks after a move to Dubai usually run on the metro and taxis. That is the sensible choice: you don't know yet where you will live, the car can wait, and the taxi fare in Dubai looks modest on a single ride. A 10 km trip costs around AED 30. So are taxis expensive in Dubai? Per ride, not really.

The question changes at the end of the first month, when you add up the receipts in the app. Two rides a day to the office, a few evenings out, a weekend trip to the beach, and the total is often closer to a car payment than to a metro pass. That is the moment most new residents ask the same thing: is it time to rent a car for the month, or is the taxi still cheaper?

The choice matters most for some people. Your home and office may sit far from a metro line. Your job may keep you moving between sites all day, like a real-estate agent, a sales manager or a project engineer. Or you may have a family, and every school run is one more taxi.

The answer is not only about price. A car brings costs the taxi meter never shows: fuel, Salik gates, parking, a mileage cap, an insurance excess. The taxi brings its own: waiting in the heat, higher fares at rush hour, and no car at all when you want to drive to Abu Dhabi on a Saturday.

So we did the arithmetic properly. Below, we price three real resident profiles: an office 9 km from home, an office 22 km away across Salik gates, and a job with 4–5 trips a day. Each one is priced by taxi and by a monthly Toyota Corolla or Nissan Sunny from Rentico, with fuel, Salik and parking included. We also show when the taxi still wins.

Short answer

Dubai taxi fare per km is AED 2.45 in October 2026, on top of a AED 5–13 starting fare. If you make one or two short trips a day (under about 10 km), or live and work near the metro, taxis and public transport stay cheaper than a monthly rental. With two longer commutes a day (20–25 km) across Salik gates, a monthly car costs about the same as taxis or less, and a budget model such as the Nissan Sunny saves roughly AED 330–1,330 a month. With 4–5 trips a day the rental wins clearly: taxis cost about AED 3,700–5,000 a month against AED 2,400–3,500 for a car with fuel, Salik and parking. A return taxi to Abu Dhabi costs more than a full month of fuel on a 22 km daily commute.

This is not a promise of a fixed saving. Your result depends on distance, time of day, parking and how many trips you actually make. Every variable is shown below, so you can swap in your own numbers.

How much is taxi fare in Dubai in 2026, part by part

Every regular Dubai taxi, whether you hail it on the street or book it through an app, charges the same per-km rate. What changes is the starting fare. The table shows the Dubai Taxi Company tariff on the day we checked it.

Dubai taxi fare per km and why it moves

The RTA links the per-km rate to the fuel price: “any change in taxi fares is a dynamic change based on the fluctuating fuel prices”. This is how the rate went from AED 1.97 in January 2023 to AED 2.09 in May 2024 and to AED 2.45 today. Petrol in the UAE went up by about 16% for October 2026, so check the per-km rate again if you read this later.

Minimum taxi fare in Dubai

The minimum taxi fare in Dubai is AED 12 for a street hail and AED 13 for an app booking. It only matters on very short hops. A 2 km street-hail ride works out at AED 9.90 on the meter, so you pay AED 12. From 3 km the meter beats the minimum.

Careem, Uber, Hala: which taxi app is cheapest in Dubai?

A regular taxi booked through Careem (Hala), S'hail or Bolt uses the same RTA tariff as the table above, including AED 2.45 per km; only the starting fare differs from a street hail. Careem's and Uber's own cars work differently: the price depends on demand and time of day, and the app shows it before you book instead of applying a fixed per-km rate. In Bayut's comparison of a 15-minute economy ride, the DTC taxi was the cheapest of the three at about AED 25, against AED 35–43 for Careem and AED 39–40 for Uber.

What a month of taxis costs: three resident profiles

This is where the cost of taxi in Dubai shows up properly: not per ride, but per month. Each profile counts 22 working days with two commute trips a day, or 4–5 trips for profile 3, plus 16 weekend trips of about 10 km. The taxi column runs from street hail (the low end) to app booking at peak (the high end). The car column runs from free parking at home and the office (the low end) to a Parkin monthly subscription of AED 525 (the high end).

This table shows a monthly cost, not a one-time payment. For the car you pay the month's rent when you collect it. A refundable deposit applies depending on the car class, or you can choose the no-deposit option from AED 27. With taxis, the money leaves your account ride by ride.

The pattern is simple. Profile 1 drives few kilometres, so the car's fixed rent is spread over too little driving. Profile 2 drives twice as far per trip and pays Salik either way, so the gap closes. Profile 3 makes 88–110 paid trips a month, and every trip carries a new starting fare. That is where taxis lose.

The cost you don't see on the receipt: time

A taxi costs money and it also costs minutes. You order the car, wait for it to arrive, and sometimes wait again because the driver cancelled. At rush hour the app also charges more to start the trip: AED 13 instead of AED 9 on weekdays, so you pay more for the slowest part of the day.

Waiting time depends on the area, the hour and the weather, and no operator publishes an average, so we don't put a dirham value on it. As an illustration: if each commute booking costs you 5–10 minutes of waiting, 44 commute trips add up to roughly 3.5–7 hours a month. Profile 3, with up to 110 trips, can lose two to three times that. If your work is paid by the hour or by the deal, that time is the strongest argument for a car.

The metro has its own hidden cost: the walk to and from the station. It doesn't show on any receipt, but in summer it decides whether people take the metro at all.

  • The rent already includes VAT and CDW. Delivery and return within Dubai are both free for rentals over AED 2,000, so the Corolla month gets both. For rentals over AED 1,000 you choose one of the two for free: with the Sunny, delivery or return is free and the other costs AED 99.

  • Fuel is the line that moves most with the market. In September 2026 Special 95 cost AED 3.69/litre, so profile 2 would have spent about AED 210 instead of AED 244. More on parking costs and free hours is in our separate guide.

Salik, Darb and parking: the fees around the car

A rental car is registered with Salik before you get the keys, so you don't buy a tag or top up a balance. Each crossing is charged at the actual Salik rate, and Rentico adds a processing fee of AED 1.50 per passage. Parking paid through Salik carries a 10% service charge.

How this lands in the main table. Salik is the one fee you pay either way: a taxi passes the same gates and adds AED 4.20–6.30 to your fare. In a rental you pay the same toll plus AED 1.50. On profile 2 that difference is about AED 66 a month. The fee that really separates the two options is parking, from AED 0 to AED 525 a month.

Compare like for like: insurance and what happens in an accident

In a taxi, an accident is the operator's problem. You don't pay for repairs, you don't fill in a damage report, and your deposit is not at risk. That is a real advantage of the taxi, and it belongs in the comparison.

A rental shifts part of that risk to you, but in a limited and known amount. Every Rentico car comes with CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) in the price. If an accident is your fault, you pay the excess; if the police report shows you're not at fault, you pay nothing.

Fines are the other risk that comes only with the car. Speed cameras don't care whether the car is yours or rented, so it is worth checking Dubai traffic rules and knowing how to check traffic fines before the first month.

Heat, rush hour and summer

The numbers in the tables assume that every trip happens as planned. Dubai's climate changes that in two ways.

First, summer heat makes any walk longer than a few minutes uncomfortable. If you rely on the metro in winter, you may find yourself switching to door-to-door taxis in summer, and your taxi bill then grows in exactly the months when you have no car.

Second, rush hour costs more in both options. The taxi app charges AED 13 to start a trip at peak instead of AED 9, Salik charges AED 6.30 instead of AED 4.20, and Parkin's premium zones cost AED 6.30 an hour at peak. If your hours are flexible, moving the commute 30 minutes outside the peak window saves money whichever way you travel.

Practical tip

Before you decide, open your taxi app and export the last 30 days of rides. Count the trips, note the average distance, and see how many fell into the peak window. Those three numbers tell you more than any average. And if you rent for the summer, keep a sunshade in the car and park in the shade or underground where you can: CDW does not cover glass or tyres.

A month away or working from home

Taxi costs follow your life. If you travel for two weeks or work from home, your taxi bill falls with you. A monthly rental does not: Rentico rents monthly cars in 30-day periods. If you return the car early, the unused part of the month isn't refunded, but the team can move your rental dates or keep the balance on your account for a future rental. Each case is reviewed individually, so tell us about your plans as early as you can. Extending a monthly rental requires notice at least 7 days before the end of the period and full prepayment.

Here is profile 2 (Al Nahda → Business Bay) in a month when you only commute half the working days.

The practical rule: if you know in advance that you'll be away for most of a month, end the rental before you leave or agree new dates with us, and start again when you're back. A monthly car only pays off in months when you actually use it.

When the taxi still wins

Being honest about this is part of the comparison. Taxis or public transport are the better choice if:

  • You make few trips. One or two short rides a day keep you below every threshold in the next section.

  • You live and work near the metro. The Nol Silver 30-day pass costs AED 230 for two zones and AED 350 for all zones. Park & Ride car parks at stations such as Rashidiya, Jabal Ali, Etisalat and Ibn Battuta are free if you continue by metro with your Nol card.

  • You don't have a valid licence for the UAE or don't feel ready to drive here. Read our Dubai traffic rules guide first, and rent only when you're comfortable.

  • Your stay is short or your month is unpredictable. A monthly rental is paid for 30 days whether you use the car or not.

Dubai metro monthly pass vs taxis

For a commute along the metro line, the Nol pass at AED 230–350 a month is the cheapest option of all: cheaper than profile 1 by taxi and far cheaper than any car. Even with ten 10 km taxi rides on top (about AED 295–375), the month stays at roughly AED 525–725. A car only makes sense if one of your two addresses is far from a station.

The threshold: from how many trips a day the rental wins

This is the question behind every other number in this article. The table shows how many taxi trips per working day you need before a monthly car becomes cheaper, depending on trip length. The lower number assumes app bookings at peak (the most expensive taxi); the higher number assumes street hails (the cheapest).

Average trip lengthCorolla, free parkingCorolla + AED 525 parkingSunny, free parkingSunny + AED 525 parking

25 km1.6–1.81.9–2.21.2–1.41.6–1.8

Trips per working day = (rent + parking) ÷ (taxi fare per trip − fuel per trip) ÷ 22. Salik is left out because you pay it in both options. Weekend trips push the threshold down further.

Two things stand out. On short trips of around 5 km, a car only wins if you take five or more taxis a day: most commuters never get there. On long trips of 20–25 km, two trips a day, a normal commute, are already enough. Distance matters more than the brand of car.

Stress test: when the model is too optimistic

Our base case uses the manufacturer's fuel figures and a clean month. Here is profile 2 again, the closest call, under less favourable assumptions.

ScenarioTaxiCorollaSunnyResult

The conclusion of the stress test: on a long commute, the budget model keeps its advantage in almost every scenario. The Corolla only wins if you use it every working day and parking is cheap. If your month is unpredictable, the taxi is the safer bet.

Weekends and trips out of Dubai

The monthly comparison above only counts trips inside Dubai. A single trip out of the city can shift the result.

Abu Dhabi to Dubai taxi fare vs a day in a rental car

The distance between Dubai and Abu Dhabi is about 140 km. On the Dubai taxi meter that is roughly AED 348–356 one way (starting fare + 140 km × AED 2.45) before Salik and Darb, or about AED 700 for a return day trip. Gulf News puts the regular taxi at “Dh300 or more” one way. Cheaper public options exist: the E100/E101 intercity bus costs AED 25–30.

On a monthly rental, a 280 km day uses about 6% of the 5,000 km allowance. If weekend trips are part of your life, see our day trip to Al Ain by car guide for another route that is hard to do by taxi.

What if you drive more than 5,000 km a month?

Both monthly rates include 5,000 km. Our three profiles use between about 560 and 1,480 km a month, so none of them comes close. The limit is a total for the month, not a daily cap, so one long weekend doesn't break it.

The profile that can hit it is someone who commutes to Abu Dhabi every day. At 280 km a day for 22 working days plus local trips, that is about 6,300 km, or 1,300 km over the allowance. Each extra kilometre costs AED 1–3 depending on the car, with the exact rate in your rental agreement: about AED 1,300–3,900 on top of the rent. By taxi, the same commute would cost more than AED 15,000 a month on the meter, so the car still wins by far. But the mileage charge is real money, so ask about the allowance before you book.

For profile 3 the risk is low. Five trips a day of 12 km is about 1,500 km. To reach 5,000 km you would need to drive more than 220 km every working day.

Bar chart comparing monthly costs in AED of taxis and rental cars for three Dubai resident profiles: office close by, office far away, on the road all day.

What to choose in practice

Office close by, 1–2 short trips a day

Stay with taxis and the metro. At about 9 km per trip, a month of taxis costs AED 1,660–2,140, less than the Corolla in every case and less than the Sunny once parking is paid. The answer changes if you start making 3–4 trips a day, or if both your building and office have free parking and you choose the budget Sunny.

Office far away, 2 long trips a day

Rent a budget car. With a 20–25 km commute across Salik gates, the Nissan Sunny saves about AED 330–1,330 a month and gives you the weekends for free. The Corolla is roughly level with taxis. In a month with fewer commute days the taxi takes over: below about 11–19 commute days for the Sunny, depending on parking and how you book; the Corolla needs at least 16 commute days a month, and with paid parking it may not beat taxis at all.

On the road all day, 4–5 trips

Rent, clearly. Taxis cost AED 3,680–5,010 a month, the car AED 2,420–3,500 with everything included, and you don't lose time waiting for every pick-up. Check the mileage only if your trips are much longer than 12 km.

Staying more than a year

If you plan to drive in Dubai for longer than a year, the question is no longer taxi versus rental but rental versus owning. We did that calculation separately: rent or buy a car in Dubai.

One conclusion instead of ten caveats

A taxi in Dubai is cheap per ride and expensive per month. If you make one or two short trips a day, live near the metro or don't want to drive, keep using taxis: they will cost less than any car. Once your daily trips are long (20 km or more) or frequent (four or more), a monthly rental car, especially a budget model, costs less than taxis even after fuel, Salik and parking. It also gives you Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the beach at the weekend for the price of fuel.

Checklist before you decide

  • Count your real trips: export 30 days of rides from your taxi app.

  • Measure your typical distance: under 10 km favours taxis, over 20 km favours a car.

  • Check parking at home and at work: free, Parkin subscription (AED 525) or a private space (AED 400–700).

  • Count the Salik gates on your commute and note whether you cross them at peak.

  • Look at the mileage: our profiles use 560–1,480 km a month against a 5,000 km allowance; a daily Abu Dhabi commute does not fit.

  • Check your licence, age and excess: drivers aged 18–21 can rent only economy cars and leave a AED 2,000 refundable deposit.

  • Plan around travel: end the rental or move the dates before a long trip instead of paying for a car in the car park.

  • Compare a budget model: in our numbers the Sunny wins in more scenarios than the Corolla.

FAQ

How much is taxi per km in Dubai?

The Dubai RTA taxi fare is AED 2.45 per km in October 2026, the same for street hails and for taxis booked through Careem, S'hail or Bolt.
